Nutrition and Pregnancy



You may hear about a lot of things that you can not do while you are pregnant, and that list can be quite long. However, you should also pay attention to the things that you can and should be doing to have a healthier baby. One big worry is nutrition and pregnancy. You are going to have cravings for some things that you may not think of as being high on the nutritional value list, but that does not mean you can not have them. What you do have to do is to make sure you find ways to get balance in your diet when eating at all other times. The good news is that this is easier than you think. You do not have to be perfect to have a healthy baby.

Babies have a way of being healthy even when our nutrition and pregnancy goals are not always reached. That should be a bit of a relief to most moms to be that crave sugar or find they are eating a half a bag of pretzels each day. However, you do still have to make some effort. The bigger problems are smoking, drinking, and drugs. If you are not doing any of those things, you are well on your way to a healthy baby even if you are not exactly eating the right foods all of the time. Add a well balanced meal at least twice a day and you are on your way to a great pregnancy.

Don't make nutrition and pregnancy harder than it is. You should already have a basic idea of what you should be eating for a well balanced meal, even if you are having a hard time making yourself eat the right foods. Fruits and vegetables are always important, so try to have them included in at least two meals if not three. They also make great snacks. Eat them in a wide variety so that you do not get bored with the same things all of the time. Boredom would tempt you to stop eating them all together.

What else should you eat in regards to nutrition and pregnancy? Think about eating a lot of whole grains and foods with omega fatty acids. These are going to help your child with brain development and to grow strong. Proteins are important for both you and the baby, and don't forget to watch out for saturated fats when choosing meals. Choose cuts of meat with less fat, and remember to cook them thoroughly. That rare steak that you like will have to wait until after you have had your baby, as you do not want to eat anything undercooked while expecting.

Don't forget that part of nutrition and pregnancy is taking a prenatal vitamin. These are designed for both pregnant and lactating women so that the baby is getting everything he or she needs, even if mom is less than perfect with her eating habits. These contain everything that both mom and baby need for a more healthy pregnancy, all in one pill, and are a must for any woman who is expecting. Taking these does not mean that you should not try to eat well, but they can help pick up the slack when you have days when ice cream and donuts are a lot more appetizing than chicken breast with a side of broccoli.

 

Help Understanding Nutrition

Eat well. Don't eat a lot of the wrong foods. Don't go heavy on the wrong carbohydrates when planning your menu. Eat more protein. Don't get bad fats, just the good ones. These are all things that you may hear when you are trying to figure out what you should and should not eat. Whether you are trying to lose weight, maintain weight loss, or just trying to make sure you are eating well, understanding nutrition can be hard. Luckily, there are some easy things that you can do to make sure you know enough about foods to get it right, at least most of the time.

One thing many are not clear on when it comes to understanding nutrition is how many times a day they should eat. Growing up, you probably learn to eat three meals a day and perhaps have a snack here and there if you are hungry. While this was tradition for a long time, many believe that you should instead eat six smaller meals a day. These include breakfast, lunch, and dinner, but also three well timed snacks. Eat at once every three or four hours to keep your metabolism running at top form.

Carbs are going to come up a lot when you are working on understanding nutrition. This is because it has become widely accepted that there are good and bad carbs. This is due in part to the popularity and success of diets like Atkins and South Beach. Diabetics also have to worry about what type of carbs they eat. When understanding nutrition in regards to carbs, there are some great books and materials out there you can get that outline the ones you should avoid and which ones are essential to a healthy diet. Look for carbs low on the glycemic index as a guide.

Fats are bad for you if you eat the wrong ones. This is one of the trickiest parts of understanding nutrition. If you eat too many saturated and trans-fats, you are going to be overweight and you will have problems with cholesterol. However, there are good fats that you should eat, like mono and poly unsaturated fats. These can be confusing, so look for information on good and bad fats when understanding nutrition so you are getting the good ones your body needs while avoiding ones that are potentially dangerous to your health.

Understanding nutrition means understanding that though you may love something, you may have to eat less of it, or you may have to find a healthier way to make and prepare it. It might mean learning to love new foods while still keeping some of your favorites on board so that you are not bored with your eating plan. You want to make sure fruits and vegetables are a part of your diet. This is one of the easiest things you can do when understanding nutrition. If you have enough, you don't have room in your diet for some of the things you should not be eating.
